Bulletin 2015-1931

JVC has received information that in February 2015, a group of Greater Toronto based criminals travelled throughout southwestern Ontario making purchases with counterfeit U.S. currency.  The group uses teams of females to make purchases at chain stores and pay with counterfeit U.S. currency, receiving Canadian currency as change.  The suspects then return the items to a store of the same chain at a different location receiving the refund in Canadian currency.

These groups have been active in incidents in Grey County, Ingersoll, Owen Sound and London as well as incidents in Central and Eastern Ontario.  The female subjects are very friendly with store clerks; speaking with fake American accents, and stating that they reside somewhere in the United States.

The most common bills are U.S. $20 denominations bearing one of three serial numbers:

ML16141513D              ML16141754D              ML16141507D

Some U.S. $100 denomination bills have been used recently in Central Ontario.  The quality of the counterfeit currency is generally sufficient to pass initial scrutiny by a cashier, however the counterfeit bills are easily identified at commercial banking institutions.

The investigators are continuing efforts to identify members of this group and any further related incidents.  Anyone with or requiring further information is asked to contact:

Detective Constable Dennis Thompson #9418, Regional Support Team, West Region Criminal Operations, Ontario Provincial Police, 630 Main Street N., Mount Forest, ON, (519) 323-3130

Detective Sergeant Scott Moore, Grey County/Bruce Peninsula, West Region Criminal Operations, Ontario Provincial Police, 317057  6 & 10 Highway, Chatsworth, ON, (519) 794-7827
